Like any other city, Paris can sometimes get too overwhelming. Especially in the summer when tourists are overflowing and the city is busier than usual. But the beauty of France is that it is a country with such a diverse landscape that you can go from the feverish city to the relaxing countryside in less than three hours. This is the appeal of Cabourg—a charming seaside town on the Normandy coast that offers a calm atmosphere and a chance for a quiet weekend getaway.
Check-In
For those who are looking to escape the stress of the city but without sacrificing standards of luxury and excellent service, Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg is a hotel deserving of its name. Located just in front of the beach, its imposing Italian Renaissance structure towers above everything else, giving guests an impression of elegance the minute you walk through its doors. Floor to ceiling mirrors and large bay windows filter the light that reflects beautifully in the lobby, with matching chandeliers and soft, velvet chairs that invite guests to lounge and relax.
After its complete refurbishment in 2011, the hotel’s rooms now combine the charm of Old World romanticism and the modern comforts expected from a luxury property. Each room has ample space for a king-sized bed, a sitting area, a desk, a separate bath, and even a foyer entrance to ensure some privacy. Best of all, rooms have balconies that look out over the ocean or the garden, where one can see the sleepy town wake up in the morning while enjoying freshly baked croissants and a warm cup of coffee.
Gourmet Experiences
There is no better place to sample excellent cuisine this side of the country than at Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg’s restaurant, Le Balbec. Here, guests can dine with a view of the sea while savoring Chef Christophe Hamonou’s take on classic dishes. Dining here is an excellent experience from start to finish, with the staff always aware of what each guest needs: fresh bread is offered periodically, wine glasses are filled without having to ask, and guest preferences are taken seriously and not just as mere after-meal comments written on a card. But the true star of this gourmet show is the food—a combination of texture, flavor, and beautiful presentation. The lobster is a must for those who expect seafood at its best, shelled and perfectly cooked, and the beef parmentier served with a generous cut of pan-seared foie gras can rival that of any Michelin star restaurant in Paris. In fact, it won’t be surprising if Le Balbec gets its own star, soon.
After such a memorable stay, you might find yourself escaping to this countryside retreat more and more. And why not? The indulgence that Le Grand Hôtel Cabourg offers is something worth escaping to.

Not many hotels have paparazzi almost permanently stationed outside, but the glamorous clientele that constantly float through the St Martins Lane in London is a camera magnet. Not only that, the ground floor of this Phillip Starck-designed spot are a photographer’s dream: plays with proportion and form see enormous vases juxtaposed with ceramic dwarf side-tables; seats in the shape of giant golden molars line up beside a ‘carpet’ made of light, which leads to the appropriately named Light Bar.
Rooms are just as quirky/cool as the lobby: minimally white, there are shocks of lime green on the wall panels. No cheesy artwork adorns the walls; instead, there is a solitary live plant. Windows stretch from floor-to-ceiling and the marble desk lights up from within. Bathrooms are spacious, with marble floors and surfaces, and candles await flames to set the mood for romantic moments.
The staff is attractive and friendly, and in fact some went well out of their way to ensure my comfort when I stayed at the St Martins Lane for London Fashion Week. For example, after a gruelling day of meetings, shows and after-parties, I was rudely awakened by jackhammers outside my window at 7.30 a.m. Shattered, I called reception and asked to move. Though the hotel was almost full, Gemma, bless her, managed to find me a quiet room on the opposite end of the hotel. Still, it should be noted that my sleep here was not long or deep, due to the fact that the blinds on the wonderfully long windows don’t quite meet the floor, allowing for a flood of sunshine into the room around 7 a.m. every morning.
Dining options are superlative. The highly rated Asia de Cuba is in the hotel, and a sampling of their menu, which includes WHAT??? Simply cannot be missed. If Asian fusion isn’t your thing, the hotel is perfectly placed in the heart of London’s Covent Garden, so the best of the city’s shopping and restaurants are a few minutes walk away. The exceptionally friendly and ever-helpful consierge, Mike, is always happy to make a reservation or recommendation.
While I was staying at the hotel, Olivia Palermo and Cheryl Cole were spotted in the lobby, amongst dozens of others who looked like they were probably famous too. The St Martins Lane hotel has that effect on you—you may not be between the pages of Hello, but you’ll feel like you probably should be.
This, is one of the best place in the world.
Koh Kooh island is a place to take your time and enjoy every minutes in your life. The Soneva Kiri is a hotel with 29 villas and residences with various places to sleep going of Eco-Suite to the Private Beach Reserve. Saint-Tropez, the darling of the Côte d'Azur, still has its splendors. La Bastide de St Tropez is one of them. Just a few hundred yards from Place des Lices, this delightful "Relais et Châteaux" hotel is a wonderful place to relax after an evening's entertainment in the French Riviera.
With its five stars and 26 guestrooms and suites, La Bastide offers the height of luxury and sophistication with a swimming pool nestling amongst a beautiful exotic garden of numerous plants and majestic palm trees. The relaxation around the pool contrasts with the hustle and bustle of the French Riviera and therein lies the appeal of this small hotel, which feels like a private villa with its terrace suites, often with hot tub. It offers everything you need to start the day the right way, on your terms and at your own pace, with breakfast by the pool or on your terrace.
The more traditional rooms are decorated in the Mediterranean style and are very cozy. The hotel's restaurant is now the domain of Philippe Colinet, who has joined it from Daniel Boulud, the big American name in New York. The cuisine is modern and obviously inspired by the Mediterranean with a wide selection of fish dishes including roasted whole John Dory, tian of preserved vegetables en cocotte with basil, lightly salted cod filet on a bed of leaks with toasted almonds and parsley foam or lobster cannelloni on a bed of lettuce with rice vinegar and shredded lettuce.
The exquisite light cuisine is perfectly cooked to enhance the flavors and served on a shaded terrace to give you the opportunity to enjoy the long summer evenings.
The exceptional desserts are a fitting end to a superb dinner in the tradition of this restaurant, which has often been Michelin starred in the past.
Fabien Delafon and his dedicated, professional team work hard to make your stay at La Bastide de St Tropez a blissful experience. Like many of the loyal guests, you're sure to want to come back.
